6 Reasons Why Dance is the Best Form of Exercise

Every single one of us face the same struggles when it comes to being healthy. Working a 9-5 job sat a desk munching on carrot sticks instead of crisps or only eating an apple through the school day seems to be the only way we think we can stay healthy. It’s hard to fit in regular exercise, and let’s face it, most of us don’t want to spend our evenings after work or school slaving away at the gym. We’d much rather be at home, sat in front of the TV with a glass of wine or a bar of chocolate. The problem is, the thought of exercising just seems so boring, so we find any excuse not to do it. That is why dance is such a good form of exercise. And here are 6 reasons to back up that statement:

  1. It’s constantly changing.

If you sign up to a dance class, you’ll always be doing something new. If we regularly do the same forms of exercise, such as running on a treadmill for half an hour, our bodies eventually adapt to this as a normal routine. This means it doesn’t have to work as hard, so you’re not burning off as many calories as you so wish you were. It is very difficult for your body to get used to all dance moves. Although our bodies do form muscle memory, we simply cannot become “used” to the endless supply of different dance moves and styles. You will always be burning calories whilst you dance!

2. It’s fun

No matter what your dancing ability – you’ll always have a good time. Whether your a keen ballerina or just a disco diva who likes to show off her moves at wedding receptions, you’re guaranteed to always enjoy yourself. So by doing something fun and enjoyable, you’re more likely to work harder and be active more often, helping to keep you in shape and burn off that extra packet of crisps you had the other day.

3. It encourages creativity

With dance, you can really make it your own. At the gym you are limited with the equipment you can use, and it’s repetitive. We get bored of our routine: running on the treadmill for 10 minutes, pulling on the rowing machine for 5, rest, 100 push ups, bla bla bla. By incorporating dance into your exercise routine, you are free to invent new forms. You chose your music, you chose your style, you chose your costume and you chose your routines. You are in control. So whilst your working out your body, you’re also working out your brain. The combination of the two is the perfect recipe for a healthy lifestyle!

4. Aerobic and Anaerobic movements

Our bodies need a mixture of aerobic and anaerobic movements to achieve it’s maximum health. Dance is a great way to exercise both of these needs, in a really fun way. Aerobic movements can be achieved through jumping, twirling and swaying, whilst anaerobic exercises includes lifting, squatting and balancing. These can be quite boring regular exercises, because c’mon, who wants to jump on the spot 50 times and then stand on one foot for 2 minutes whilst you pull on your ear to keep balance? By taking up dance, you are achieving all of these exercises without even having to think about it, so your body can reach it’s maximum potential!

5. You can express yourself

Many people think that exercise just involves keeping your body active. This it not the right way to be truly healthy. In order for your body to be at its maximum health, your mind must also be healthy. By using dance as your main form of exercise, you are free to express yourself. Stressed about exams? Create a dance that relieves that negative energy. This way you will rid your mind of all the stress it is coping with and make room for more positive energy. You will then feel more alive and your brain will be much more active; making you an overall healthier person.

6. There’s something for everyone

The world of dance is so vast and so beautiful, so there is always a dance style that you will love. Whether you prefer to rock it out to Chris Brown in a hip-hop routine, or float and glide through a contemporary piece to the classic Einaudi, you can always find yourself through dance. Finding yourself, along with the things you enjoy, is the number one way to stay fit and healthy. Once you know exactly who you are and what you like, you will strive. You will get that gorgeous toned bod you have been longing for, and you’ll have fun doing it.
